When MLD may be considered
Following assessment, MLD may be included in care for:
Lymphedema and related swelling.
Selected cases of swelling after surgery or injury.
Lymphatic changes following cancer treatment.
MLD may be one part of a broader plan that includes movement, compression, skin care, and education when appropriate. The approach depends on the cause of swelling and your clinical needs.
When to seek medical advice first
Do not proceed with MLD during an active infection, including cellulitis, or with a suspected or known blood clot. Fever or new, unexplained swelling needs medical assessment before massage.
Tell Olga about heart or kidney conditions, cancer treatment, recent surgery, and any instructions from your medical team. Additional medical clearance may be needed before treatment can begin.

Your care starts with a PT consultation
During your consultation, Olga Kaltsou, PT, DPT reviews your concerns, health history, and goals to determine the appropriate next step. The final treatment recommendation, including whether to use MLD, is made at that consultation. A further evaluation or clearance from your medical team may be needed.

Post-surgery MLD
Timing depends on your procedure, healing stage, and your surgeon’s instructions. MLD does not replace surgical follow-up.
If recommended, gentle techniques and positioning are adapted to your comfort. Results and the number of visits vary.
