Pedal Pain-Free This Summer. Your Body Will Thank You

Summer brings such joy—longer days, beautiful weather, and an irresistible pull to spend more time outdoors. For many of my patients, this season means dusting off the bike and embracing those scenic rides that make us feel so alive and connected to nature. There's nothing quite like the freedom of cycling through a summer evening or the satisfaction of completing a challenging route.

But as a physical therapist who treats many passionate cyclists, I also see how this increase in riding frequency and duration can bring unexpected challenges. You might be reading this while dealing with hip tightness after yesterday's ride, or perhaps you're wondering why your lower back aches every time you get off your bike. If this sounds like you, I want you to know that you're not alone, and more importantly, you don't have to accept pain as the price of your passion.

The truth is, cycling creates a perfect storm for what we call repetitive trauma. While you're getting an incredible workout and doing something wonderful for your cardiovascular health, your body is also performing thousands of repetitive motions in a fixed position. During just one hour of riding, you complete 5,000-6,000 pedal strokes while maintaining essentially the same posture.

This repetitive positioning, especially during our enthusiastic summer riding season, often leads to hip flexor tightness, glute weakness, lower back compression, IT band irritation, and neck tension.

Here's what many cyclists don't realize: your hips are the powerhouse of your pedal stroke, yet they're often the most neglected part of your body. When you're seated on your bike, your hips remain flexed for extended periods, causing hip flexors to shorten and tighten while your glutes become lengthened and weak. The fascinating thing about the human body is how interconnected everything truly is—a restriction in your hip can literally affect how your entire spine functions during your ride.

The good news is that this is where our approach at Holistic Physical Therapy and Pilates becomes transformative. We don't just treat the area that hurts; we examine how your daily life, work demands, sleep patterns, and overall movement quality contribute to your cycling discomfort. During your comprehensive assessment, I observe how you move, analyze your breathing patterns and posture, and identify the root cause of your pain.

Our treatment combines hands-on manual therapy with therapeutic exercises tailored specifically to your cycling goals. Additionally, we offer two breakthrough technologies that are particularly powerful for cyclists: our advanced shockwave therapy, which uses acoustic waves to restart healing in chronically tight tissues, and our LightForce Pro Deep Tissue Laser Therapy, which provides rapid pain relief and accelerated healing from repetitive trauma.

Summer is too precious to spend it choosing between the activities you love and living pain-free. If you're ready to experience what cycling feels like when your body moves as it's designed to—with power, efficiency, and comfort—I'd love to help you get there.

Schedule your free discovery visit today, and let's discuss how to get you back to enjoying those long summer rides without the nagging pain that's been holding you back.
